CLIMATE CHANGE THREATENING FOOD SECURITY AND NUTRITION LEVELS

The Food and Agricultural Organization has warned that farmers in different parts of the world can expect agricultural yields to either rise or fall over the next three decades due to climate change.



In Zambia especially parts of central and Southern Provinces, farmers are already grappling with the effects of climate change as most of their crops have dried up due to dry spells.



It is therefore imperative that the country continues to design and implement interventions that could increase the adaptive capacity of smallholder farmers and measures that would contribute towards mitigation efforts of climate change.

“If only I knew that there were services such as Sexual and Reproductive Health Services, I could not have fallen pregnant while I was still at school,” Faith Buyamba, a youth based in Kitwe, on the Copper belt province believes.   On a sunny day of October 13, 2023, I roamed the grounds to catch a glimpse of the displays put forth by farmers at the 2023 Zambian Traditional Seed and Food Festival, which took place at Mundawanga in Chilanga District recently. As a first-time attendee of the event, I moved from one stand to another, admiring the variety of local foods produced by Zambian farmers. As I was about to explore another stand, my attention was caught by a woman inquiring at one of the stands about the availability of Millet and Sorghum. She was eager to purchase these grains for consumption.
